EMIC is located in the city of São José dos Pinhais, in the Metropolitan Area of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, 100 km from the Port of Paranaguá. With the international-standard infrastructure of the Afonso Pena International Airport, the second Brazilian airport to have the Airport-Harbour Integrated Information System, and the presence of important multinational companies like Renault-Nissan and Audi-Volkswagen, São José dos Pinhais became an industrial center, which also produces dairy products, lumber, paper, plastic, metals, glassfiber, farming equipment, beverages, textiles, to name but a few.
 
     
 
The city enjoys a priviledged location because of the easy access to the highway network: BR-116, going to São Paulo, Santa Catarina or Rio Grande do Sul; BR- 376, the stretch from São José dos Pinhais to Joinville, southward, and the other direction to the interior of Paraná; and BR-277 (the Coffee Highway), which makes it easy to transport the harvest of the state to the Port of Paranaguá and other centers.
 
There are many indexes that show the fast-growing economy of São José dos Pinhais, such as its gross domestic product that has tripled in the last six years, from R$ 1,223,171,637.00 in 1996 [adjusted according to the IGPM], to R$ 4,545,266,340.00, in 2002. The industrial sector has contributed with 73%; commerce with 13%; services with 13% and agriculture with 1%. The city is third in rank, as far as tax revenue is regarded, in the state of Paraná.
 
Greater Curitiba
 
Made up of 25 municipalities, with a population of 2.42 million inhabitants, the Greater Curitiba (Curitiba and its metropolitan area) is home to the largest population concentration in the south of Brazil. The city is also home to the second largest automotive industrial centre in Brazil.
 
In addition to being an important industrial centre, Curitiba is also known as being one of Brazil’s the most prosperous and organized metropolises, offering the highest level of life quality in the country. The capital of the state of Paraná is a model to the world regarding urban solutions, education and environment, enjoying a typically European climate.
 
 
          
 
With a gross domestic product of US$12.1 billion per year, it has a per capita income of approximately US$8,000 per year. Nationally and internacionally renowned for its innovative urban solutions, the city has the most efficient public transportation system in the country and boasts 55 square meters of green area per inhabitant, three times as much as what is recommended by the World Health Organization [WHO], which is 16 sqmt. That is why it is considered the Ecological Capital of Brazil. The city has 26 parks and approximately 81 million square meters of protected green areas. In Brazil, Curitiba is where the coastal forest is best preserved.
